Several Degrees of Attention: Thinking with the Collection

Several Degrees of Attention: Thinking with the Collection is an exhibition catalogue featuring four curatorial projects, each one departing from a work or group of works in the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery’s collection.

Curated by Māia Abraham, Elle Loui August, Simon Gennard, and Amy Weng, the exhibition presented work by Kate Coolahan, Turumeke Harrington, Ralph Hotere, Sonya Lacey, Rozana Lee, Maria Olsen, Michael Parekōwhai, and W A Sutton.

I worked closely with Simon Gennard on this edition of 2000.

Designed shortly after we completed the gallery’s typography-led rebrand, this catalogue and room guide includes explanatory essays and explores the relationship between a legacy collection of (then) contemporary art and works in response by present-day curators and artists. Headline type wraps around the pages, visually expressing new views and perspectives. Bold colour selection differentiated each exhibition within the show and guided navigation in print.

“From the beginning, Emma had a nuanced understanding of the ambitions of the exhibition, worked sensitively to honour and elevate the artists and curators involved, and approached the identity and publication design with a sense of dynamism, playfulness and fastidious attention to detail. At every point, from ideation to production, she was an incredible collaborator, and we felt so supported to work towards something amazing.”
